Legend and stories passed down from players of the past, date the origins of the Sydney University Football Club to 1863 with matches against crews of visiting naval ships. The Sydney University Football Club is the oldest club outside of Britain and the eighth oldest in the world after Guy’s Hospital (1843), Dublin University (1854), Edinburgh Academicals (1857), Liverpool (1857), Blackheath (1858), Richmond (1861) and Sale (1861).
“On the afternoon of 19th August, 1865 a rugby match was played on the University grounds. After an exciting struggle, which lasted an hour and a half, during which no goals were obtained by either side, the game was stopped owing to a misunderstanding with regard to the rules.”

The Sydney District Competition was established in 1900. Prior to 1900 Uni won eighteen 1st grade competitions and five 2nd grade competitions, with a first past the post system. Sydney University has won 28 First Grade Premierships and 96 Premierships in total across all Grades and Colts since 1900.

The Club has had great success in recent years, consistently featuring in, and winning, Grand Finals. The Club has won the Club Championship thirteen times, including the last eight years in a row, and finished second on the other three occasions. The Colts Club Championship has also been won nine times including the last seven years in a row.

In 2011, all 7 teams from the Club contested the finals series, with three claiming Minor Premierships, four claiming Major Premierships and one team being awarded runners up. In 2011 1st Grade won a number of perpetual trophies, during the 22 round competition - White Ribbon Cup (West Harbour v SUFC), Emergency Services Shield (SUFC v Southern Districts), John Thornett Cup (Northern Suburbs v SUFC), David Brockhoff OAM Cup (SUFC v Eastern Suburbs and Tooth / Cutler Trophy (Gordon v SUFC).

Established in 2005, the SUFC Juniors are going from strength to strength. In 2011 SUFC were represented in four age categories at the Junior State Championships - under 17s, under 16s, under 13s and under 11s. The Sydney University Women’s team won their second consecutive Grand final in 2011. The win caps off another successful year for the women’s team, who also claimed the Minor Premiership and remained undefeated for the entire 2011 season.

SUFC has the proud tradition of producing representative players. The Club has produced 111 Australian Representatives, of which 91 are Wallabies and between them they have played 879 test matches. Our most recent Wallaby is Nick Phipps, who played against Russia in the Rugby World Cup 2011. SUFC have 5 members in the Australian 30 man Wallaby squad for the 2011 Rugby World Cup, more than any other club in Australia.
